Buck Moon
We send our newsletter each month on the full moon to celebrate how we launched, roasting coffee outdoors in Jamesport, NY beneath the full moon.
The full Moon in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by. What a beautiful metaphor for growth!
Earlier this summer we invested into scaling our growth. Now that we are settled with our new green coffee bean importers, like a buck with new antlers, we have some runway and an improved set up to grow into. We finally have the bandwidth to nurture our much neglected social media presence on instagram which will be a focus for this month.
Decaf is coming soon to our site, made from the decaffeinated version of the Brazilian Pedra Branca natural process bean featured in our High Tide espresso. Until this point it’s only been available at the coffee bar at LUMBER + Salt and by special request to my sister-in-law Gloria (love you!). We’re thrilled to make it available on our website later this month.
Nitro Cold Brew has been restocked at Sang Lee Farms! We also have a new round of cans currently in production at the coffee roastery that will be ready soon.
Coffee subscriptions are now available
We are pleased to offer coffee subscriptions! Please enjoy a recurring 10% discount off of coffee with a monthly subscription. The set up is simple, on the product page simply choose between a subscription at the discounted price or a regular full price purchase.
You can subscribe to our offering of organic Rwandan light roast that is fruity and citrusy with the sweetness of toffee, organic Rwandan medium roast that goes a level juicier with notes of cherry, mango and grapefruit; and finally our High Tide Espresso, a blend of Guatemalan and Brazilian beans with a “chewy” body, notes of dark chocolate, jammy dried fruit and berry undertones.
The Apothecary is live!
Last month we announced that we would launch an apothecary section on our website. We are excited to share a modest assortment of herbal remedies that we rely on in our own home, that Ana foraged and crafted through an ongoing herbalism apprenticeship. Our products are mostly wildcrafted (gathered from their natural habitats) with some cultivated medicinal plants in the mix. We are soft launching this new section of our website with a bruise balm, and a few more items “coming soon.” All formulations are ready but we are waiting on labels.
Bruise Balm - a salve of equal parts olive oil infused with foraged arnica flowers and olive oil infused with comfrey, plus beeswax and shea butter to make this a solid balm that can travel into the field for topical application to bruises, sprains and strains.
Rosemary Nettle Hair Oil - a beautiful blend of organic jojoba oil infused with rosemary and foraged wild nettle in a convenient dropper bottle to apply directly to hair roots. Rosemary stimulates circulation and hair growth, and has wonderful cleansing and rejuvenating properties to support new growth. Nettle provides nourishment to support and strengthen a healthy mane. Apply before shampooing or leave on overnight, and use on ends for extra protection agains dryness and split ends.
Probiotic Rose Mask - A cheerful blend of French pink clay, powdered rose petals and probiotic powder to draw out impurities, soothe and strengthen the skin’s microbiome. Simply add your choice of liquid like spring water, honey, yogurt or herbal tea to achieve the desired consistency, apply to clean skin, let dry and rinse when desired.
Single plant tinctures, known as “simples”
Rose, St. John’s Wort, Motherwort, Oregon Grape Root
Things we’re excited about that have nothing to do with coffee
I have really come to appreciate my sense of smell, which hasn’t always been very sharp. When I attended my first roasting class in 2016, at the end we did a cupping. I felt embarrassed because I could not tell a meaningful difference between the coffees. I know now that my sense of smell was underdeveloped, and therefore my sense of taste was too. These things takes time to cultivate. The first order of business for improving my sense of smell was to reverse a lifetime of congestion. This is part of a much longer story but the short version is that daily use of a neti pot to rinse my sinuses was a complete game changer.
As a next step, I reduced the noise of everyday fragrances in my environment. As a family we switched to unscented shampoo, conditioner and laundry detergent, keeping some products fragranced naturally with essential oils (like my beloved Living Libations “best skin ever” oil that I will never part with!).
I don’t think I can properly express in words how much these two steps jump started my ability to smell, which I have been honing for the past few years. I can now smell Tide laundry detergent from what feels like a mile away. I get overwhelmed pretty easily when I go into spaces that are heavily fragranced. Even the aroma of the coffee roastery gets to me after a few hours. My sense of smell can be overwhelming but the benefits have been tremendous. Food tastes better. Anything with a complex flavor like wine or coffee presents a fun puzzle to decode. I can isolate and identify individual notes within a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. I use it for plant identification. I struggled with not having a sense of smell for most of my life and I wanted to share that it’s possible to work on it. And with enough effort, who knows, your sense of smell might develop into a superpower.
That’s all from us for now! We’ll see you on August 9th for the next full moon, the Sturgeon Moon.
Warmly,
Ana and Brett
